Pop Art - Brighten your life with an iconic style!
Did you know that we are quite a creative bunch here at Maia? From photography to illustration and fun craft projects, we love a bit of art in our lives! We also love to incorporate different art styles into our home to create a unique look and one we really love right now is Pop Art!
This iconic art movement emerged during the mid to late 1950s and is well known for its use of popular and mass culture, borrowing the aesthetics of advertising and comic books, as well as its commercial production methods. The distortion of everyday objects, an emphasis on the banal elements of culture or economic production and the use of irony or wit make Pop Art so distinct.
Mundane objects taken out of their context, flashy colours and the defiance of realistic proportions are all part of creating striking pieces of art. This approach really lends itself to amazing home decor. With their playful attitude our favourites below can transform your living space or kitchen.
We love this Oat Milk Ceramic Vase and the quirky Newspaper Ceramic Vase! Their designs are humorous and fun. Even if you don't like flowers, these are stylish décor pieces that will pop (pardon the pun) on their own!
The smiley face is one of the most universally recognisable symbols in the world. It has been catapulted to stardom thanks to the pop art movement and the mass production of prints. With our Smiley Face Ceramic Mug you can start you day with art and a smile!
Using everyday objects or mass-produced food is a staple of pop art and our Pickle Jar Ceramic Mug is sure to look like a playful sculpture on your dining table!
Fruits & veg have always had their place in Pop Art! Pop Art often incorporates them as subjects, presented in bright, bold colours and stylised looks. Artists like Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Yayoi Kusama have famously used food items in their creations. Their distinct shapes and colours really lend themselves to experimentation and repetition.
The depiction of fruit and vegetable has a long tradition in art. From memento mori paintings to depict the cycle of life and death to the still life paintings of the Dutch masters, their symbolic meaning and detailed surfaces made them a great subject. Over time this genre evolved. Cézanne, Van Gogh, and Picasso used it to experiment with form, colour and perspective. Pop Art seized the moment to truly reinvent the genre. The greats of the Pop Art movement would surely enjoy sending fruit emojis today!
Pretty and with a cheeky note, this Aubergine Pendant Necklace in Gold is sure to add an eye-catching finish to your look.
In the true tradition of playfulness, our Red Cherry Huggie Hoop Earrings evoke that childhood memory of picking cherries and wearing them as earrings...until we couldn't resist any longer.
Bold, fun and super quirky, these Mini Tomato Hair Claw Clip Set are sure to add a pop of art!
Another great example of a bit of cheekiness (literally)! With our Enamel Peach Pendant Necklace in Gold you can show your love for all things sweet and perfectly formed.
Condiments, convenient & fast food are probably one of the most well-known elements of Pop Art. Mass production is opposed to what art suggests and conveys. Playing and incorporating fast production and endless reproduction made art easy to consume. It created a intriguing web of consumerism critique, ironic appropriation and defiance of the rigid view of traditional art.
The interest in mass production, printing techniques and the mundane & everyday also meant that such items could become icons beyond their use. This influential approach has inspired food photography ever since and brands have used the distinct style of Pop Art in their packaging and advertising, creating a full circle moment.

Andy Warhol would approve! Our Barner Charles Crystal Green and Tortoise Shell Sunglasses are the perfect choice for artists or those who love a an eye-catching design. Andy Warhol not only was one of the leading figures of the Pop Art movement, he was also a creative trendsetter, socialite and of course, an iconic glasses wearer!
Roy Lichtenstein would be intrigued! Lichtenstein is known for his large-scale close up paintings of comic book strips and ads, which often depicted a nostalgic and domestic ideal of the American life, and taking them out of context. Our Red Cowboy Boot Trinket Dish is repurposing and subverting the connotation of the cowboy boot, an item synonymous with Americana and bygone eras.
Smudge Bear Tote Bag captures the playfulness of this art movement perfectly! Wearing a teddy as an oversized tote? The play with size, texture and instant recognisability creates a truly fun accessory. This quirky tote reminds us of the playful works of Claes Oldenburg, an artist well known for his oversized sculptures depicting giant versions of food & everyday objects.
